Gauff Advances, Medvedev Eliminated at Canadian Open
Top seed Coco Gauff made a thrilling comeback from a set down to defeat Russian Veronika Kudermetova 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 and advance to the last 16 of the Canadian Open, despite struggling with double faults and a less effective serve. Gauff praised her mental resilience and return game in what was a tough match lasting over two and a half hours. In the men's tournament, former U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev was upset by Australian Alexei Popyrin in three sets, continuing a series of surprising results in the competition. Other notable results included American Alex Michelsen toppling third seed Lorenzo Musetti, and German top seed Alexander Zverev overcoming a set deficit to claim his 500th tour-level match win. On the women's side, Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska and American McCartney Kessler caused upsets by defeating higher-seeded opponents Emma Navarro and Mirra Andreeva, respectively. Ninth seed Elena Rybakina also advanced by defeating Jaqueline Cristian of Romania.
