Ramaphosa Orders Probe in KZN Police Task Team Row

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of interfering in investigations into political killings and organised crime, claiming Mchunu disbanded a specialised task team to protect influential syndicate members. Mkhwanazi alleges the task team investigated over 600 cases and achieved numerous convictions before its dissolution, attributing the move to political interference. Mchunu has denied the accusations after being summoned by ANC leadership to account, calling them baseless and unsupported by evidence. President Cyril Ramaphosa described the allegations as a grave national security concern and announced an urgent investigation, cautioning that public accusations could damage trust in law enforcement. The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal warned that substantiated claims could threaten the party’s renewal and electoral prospects in the province. Despite the controversy, Mkhwanazi has vowed to continue fighting corruption and organised crime within the justice system.
