The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has fined the District Magistrate (DM) of Kanpur Nagar ₹25,000 for failing to comply with directives regarding a report on toxic metal exposure, particularly chromium, affecting local residents. The tribunal was reviewing environmental issues linked to untreated industrial effluents discharged by local tanneries and the operation of a common effluent treatment plant. Despite previous instructions, the DM submitted the report without proper protocol and did not appear to discuss it, which led to the imposition of the fine. Additionally, the NGT fined the Delhi Jal Board CEO ₹10,000 for not providing a report on sewage treatment plants along the Yamuna River. Both cases highlight ongoing environmental oversight challenges in India, with further proceedings scheduled for November 22 regarding the DJB. The tribunal emphasized the importance of accountability and adherence to its directives to protect public health.
