Ron Nirenberg returns to Trinity University as Professor of Practice

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg will join Trinity University as the Calgaard Distinguished Professor of Practice in the Department of Communication after completing his term in office. Nirenberg, a 1999 Trinity graduate who previously worked at the university’s radio station, will teach communication courses, deliver a public lecture, and serve as a university ambassador during the 2025-26 academic year. University officials and Nirenberg highlighted that his return reflects both his commitment to public service and the institution’s dedication to real-world learning, emphasizing the intersection of communication, public policy, and leadership. The appointment, which is renewable after 12 months, is named for former Trinity President Ronald K. Calgaard and is intended to enrich the academic and civic engagement of the campus. Nirenberg, who handled major city crises like the COVID-19 pandemic as mayor, expressed his eagerness to give back to the university that shaped his leadership. He has also stated that he is not currently exploring other public office opportunities.
