Guinea's ruling military junta has introduced a draft constitution that proposes reducing presidential terms from six years to five and limiting presidents to two terms. This draft, presented by the National Transition Council, aims to stabilize governance amid public discontent and outlines requirements for presidential candidates to be between 35 and 80 years old. However, the opposition, represented by the Living Forces of Guinea (FVG), has rejected the draft, arguing it allows military leaders to participate in elections and undermines a return to civilian rule. Protests erupted in Conakry following the arrests of anti-junta activists, which the opposition labeled as kidnappings. The junta plans to put the constitution to a referendum by the end of the year, although the timeline for presidential elections remains unclear. This political transition follows a coup in 2021, which ousted former President Alpha Conde after he controversially extended his term.
