Survey Finds Older Adults Reluctant to Adopt Technology
A recent survey of over 1,000 individuals aged 65 and older revealed that 26% aspire to enhance their technology skills but face numerous barriers, including concerns about online privacy, high costs, and the rapid pace of technological change. Many respondents express apprehension about using video calls and smart assistants, with 20% feeling nervous. Despite these worries, 53% believe technology could simplify their lives, particularly through innovations like smart meters and smartwatches, which 78% and 34% respectively see as beneficial for managing bills and health. The research, commissioned by Smart Energy GB and supported by Toyah Willcox, highlights the importance of user-friendly devices and the role of younger generations in assisting older adults with technology. Willcox emphasized the need for research and peer advice to navigate new gadgets, sharing her positive experience with her smart meter. Overall, 85% of participants acknowledge that technology can save time and enhance communication with loved ones.
