Kermit the Frog to Speak at UMD Graduation

Kermit the Frog has been announced as the commencement speaker for the University of Maryland's 2025 graduation ceremony on May 21st. This choice honors the legacy of Jim Henson, a UMD alumnus and creator of the Muppets, who first crafted Kermit using his mother's coat and a ping-pong ball in 1955. Kermit's presence underscores the enduring connection between the university and Henson's creations. University President Darryll J. Pines expressed pride in Henson's legacy and anticipates Kermit's message of optimism will inspire graduates. Kermit, performed by Matt Vogel since 2017, previously spoke at UMD, delivering messages about following dreams and embracing individuality. This event marks Kermit's second commencement speech, having previously spoken at Southampton College in 1996.
