Phillies Demote Rookie Mick Abel to Triple-A, Recall Seth Johnson
The Philadelphia Phillies have optioned rookie right-hander Mick Abel to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after struggles in his recent starts. Abel, who dazzled in his major league debut with nine strikeouts and no earned runs, has since posted a 5.04 ERA with 21 strikeouts and nine walks over six starts. His last outing was particularly rough, giving up five runs in just 1 2/3 innings against the San Diego Padres. To fill the roster spot, the Phillies recalled reliever Seth Johnson from Triple-A. Manager Rob Thomson emphasized that Abel needed to reset and regain his composure, pointing to his strong minor league performance this year. The team has yet to decide on the fifth starter after the All-Star break and is considering options, including top prospect Andrew Painter and possible bullpen games.
