Cal Raleigh Hits 40th Home Run, Sets Mariners Five-Season Record
Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners became the first MLB player in the 2025 season to hit 40 home runs with a tiebreaking solo shot against the Los Angeles Angels, marking his 133rd career homer and surpassing Ken Griffey Jr. for the most homers by a Mariners player in their first five MLB seasons. Raleigh, known as "Big Dumper," also joined an elite group as the seventh catcher in MLB history to hit 40 homers in a single season, and is on pace to potentially break Salvador Perez's single-season catcher home run record of 48 and Aaron Judge's AL single-season record of 62. His performance has propelled the Mariners into contention in the AL West, trailing the Houston Astros by 4.5 games and staying in the wild card race. Alongside his power hitting, Raleigh is hitting a career-best .255 with an OPS of .987, ranking third in baseball behind Judge and Shohei Ohtani. In the game against the Angels, George Kirby earned the win with nine strikeouts over six innings, while the Mariners’ offense was bolstered by contributions from Julio Rodríguez and Randy Arozarena. The Angels continue to struggle, having lost five of their last six games, and faced injuries including Yoán Moncada who left after being hit by a pitch.
