Hoard of 404 Ancient Coins Discovered in Netherlands

In October 2023, two metal detectorists discovered a remarkable hoard of 404 ancient coins in Bunnik, the Netherlands, a find that includes a unique mix of Roman and British currency. This collection features 116 gold coins, including 72 Roman aurei and 44 British staters bearing the name of the Celtic king Cunobelinus, alongside 288 silver coins minted between 200 B.C. and A.D. 47. The hoard, which is on display at the National Museum of Antiquities, is believed to have been buried around A.D. 47, potentially hidden by a Roman soldier returning from Britain as a reward for successful military campaigns. Researchers suggest that the coins represent a significant monetary gift equivalent to about 11 years of a Roman soldier's wages. This discovery is notable for its unprecedented mix of artifacts, shedding light on trade, warfare, and cultural exchange between ancient civilizations. The coins are thought to have been buried in a shallow pit, stored in a cloth or leather pouch, uncovering new insights into Roman military practices and interactions with Britain.
