U.S. Secures Release of 135 Nicaraguan Prisoners

The United States has secured the release of 135 political prisoners from Nicaragua, including 13 members of the Texas-based Mountain Gateway organization. These individuals, detained for exercising fundamental freedoms, have been sent to Guatemala, where they can apply for resettlement in the U.S. or other countries. The release was facilitated by the Biden administration, with significant support from Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo. U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan emphasized the ongoing call for Nicaragua to end arbitrary arrests and detentions. The freed prisoners include students, Catholic laypeople, and human rights defenders, reflecting the broad scope of repression under President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo's regime.
