Spain Suspends €285 Million Israeli Missile Deal Amid Gaza Conflict

Spain has suspended and effectively canceled a €285 million contract with Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems for the delivery of 168 Spike LR2 anti-tank missile systems, signaling a strategic move to sever military and technological ties with Israel amid ongoing conflict in Gaza. The contract, initially authorized in October 2023 just before the escalation of violence, was to be fulfilled by Pap Tecnos, Rafael’s Spanish subsidiary, with systems manufactured domestically. The decision aligns with Spain's broader effort to eliminate dependency on Israeli military technology, especially in light of human rights concerns and accusations against Israel concerning the Gaza conflict, including allegations of genocide. Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles and State Secretary for Defense Amparo Valcarce have emphasized plans to replace Israeli systems with alternatives such as the US-made FGM-148F Javelin missile. This policy shift follows Spain’s parliamentary recommendation to ban military contracts with Israel and occurs amid international legal scrutiny of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Spain has also halted other arms deals with Israel, reflecting a comprehensive approach to disconnection from Israeli defense technology.
