The California state legislature has passed two significant cannabis bills that could reshape the industry. Assembly Bill 1775 would allow the creation of Amsterdam-style cannabis cafes where patrons can consume cannabis, order food, and enjoy live performances. This bill aims to support the legal cannabis market struggling against illegal competitors by creating a more social and welcoming atmosphere. Assembly Bill 1111 permits small cannabis growers to sell directly to consumers at state-organized farmers markets, with on-site consumption allowed. These measures, however, face potential hurdles as Governor Gavin Newsom, who previously vetoed a similar cannabis cafe bill, must still sign them into law. The American Cancer Society has expressed concerns about AB 1775, arguing it conflicts with existing smoke-free policies.
