Jefferson County Board Chooses Brian Yearwood as New Superintendent

Brian Yearwood has been selected as the next superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), succeeding Dr. Marty Pollio who is retiring. The JCPS Board of Education voted to begin contract negotiations with Yearwood, although they have not officially announced his name pending contract finalization. State Rep. Jason Nemes prematurely revealed Yearwood's selection on social media, expressing support and emphasizing the need for academic improvement and safety in JCPS, despite criticism for disclosing the information before the official announcement. Yearwood, a native of Trinidad and Tobago, has nearly 35 years of experience in education administration, including serving as superintendent of Columbia Public Schools in Missouri until his recent retirement under a confidential separation agreement. While two board members opposed starting contract negotiations with Yearwood, citing preference for the other finalist Ben Shuldiner, there is overall cautious optimism that Yearwood will improve JCPS and work collaboratively with Kentucky lawmakers. The district hopes Yearwood’s leadership will address longstanding academic and safety challenges and foster a positive relationship with legislators amid calls to restructure the school system.
