Cyberpunk 2 Enters Pre-Production with 96 Developers at CD Projekt Red

CD Projekt Red has officially moved its Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, previously codenamed Project Orion, into the pre-production phase and is now referring to it as Cyberpunk 2. This sequel is in the early stages of development, led by senior staff from the original game and new hires from notable studios, and will be built using Unreal Engine 5 rather than the original Red Engine. While details about the game's setting remain sparse, the Cyberpunk tabletop creator hinted at the possibility of players exploring a second city. The development timeline is expected to span four to five years, suggesting a release around 2030 or 2031, especially as the studio is also focused on other projects like The Witcher 4. Cyberpunk 2077's reputation has significantly improved following extensive updates and the success of its Phantom Liberty expansion, which has sold over 10 million copies, contributing to the franchise's redemption from its initial troubled launch. CD Projekt Red plans to release Cyberpunk 2077 on new platforms soon, including Switch 2 and macOS, while prioritizing careful development to avoid past mistakes.
