Female boxer fails gender test

The participation of Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yuting in the Paris 2024 Olympics has sparked controversy following their disqualification from the 2023 World Championships due to failing gender tests that indicated they possess XY chromosomes. IBA President Umar Kremlev has stated that if athletes wish to prove their gender identity, they should provide evidence, highlighting the lack of documentation from the athletes. Both Khelif and Yuting, who have competed as women, are alleged to have Differences of Sexual Development (DSD), raising concerns about fairness in women’s sports. In response to public criticism, Australian boxer Skye Nicolson defended the fighters, asserting that they were born female and have lived as women. Meanwhile, WBO official István Kovács claimed that the IOC was informed about Khelif's gender test results prior to the Olympics, but no action was taken. The situation remains contentious, with increasing scrutiny on the policies governing gender eligibility in sports.
