Kneecap Secured Electric Picnic Set Despite Controversy

Kneecap, the Irish language rap trio known for their vocal support of Palestine, will perform at the 2025 Electric Picnic festival in Ireland without censorship, as festival promoters confirmed their microphones would not be switched off. Festival Republic boss Melvin Benn emphasized the importance of including Kneecap, calling it a significant statement given the current global context and praising their musical talent and message. Despite controversy and police investigations following their Glastonbury performance, where they criticized UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, police decided to take no further action against the band. Kneecap member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh faces court proceedings over charges related to displaying a proscribed organization’s flag, but the band insists these legal issues are distractions from their advocacy for Palestine. The band has faced cancellations elsewhere, such as from the TRNSMT festival due to safety concerns, but Electric Picnic organizers reaffirm their support and long history with Kneecap, highlighting their role in giving voice to important social issues. The festival is expected to draw a record crowd of around 80,000 people, with other headliners including Hozier, Sam Fender, and Kings of Leon.
