The Indian government has launched the PM E-Drive Scheme, aiming to boost electric vehicle (EV) adoption with a budget of ₹10,900 crore over two years. This new scheme, which replaces the FAME II program, offers subsidies of ₹10,000 for electric two-wheelers and ₹50,000 for three-wheelers, while promoting public transport electrification through the deployment of 14,028 electric buses. Notably, the plan excludes subsidies for electric cars, focusing instead on two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and commercial vehicles to drive EV penetration to 10% and 15% in respective markets by 2026. The initiative also allocates funds for the installation of 88,500 EV charging stations, including 22,000 fast chargers. The government emphasizes compliance with domestic manufacturing standards to mitigate previous subsidy misuse seen under FAME, with regular checks planned. The overarching goal is to create a sustainable EV ecosystem and reduce transportation's environmental impact.
