Sinkhole in Seoul kills motorcyclist, investigation launched

A tragic incident occurred in Seoul when a massive sinkhole swallowed a motorcyclist during the evening rush hour, leading to his death after a 17-hour search. Dashcam footage showed the motorcycle plunging into the sinkhole, which measured 20 meters wide and deep, while a car narrowly escaped being engulfed. Rescuers found the man in his 30s approximately 50 meters from the sinkhole's center, still wearing his helmet and motorcycle boots. This incident prompted an investigation into the sinkhole's cause, particularly concerning ongoing construction for a metro line extension nearby, despite previous inspections reporting no abnormalities. The city has recorded 223 sinkholes in the past decade, raising concerns about public safety. In light of this event, several nearby schools closed for safety precautions.
