Singapore Airlines Jet Weather Radar Sent US Tests After Fatal Turbulence
Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 experienced severe turbulence over Myanmar in May 2024, resulting in one passenger's death and injuries to 79 others. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300ER, encountered an uncommanded increase in altitude and airspeed likely caused by an updraft, with turbulence involving rapid gravitational force changes of about 3g lasting nearly five seconds. The flight diverted to Bangkok following the incident. Investigations led by Singapore’s Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB), with assistance from the US National Transportation Safety Board, FAA, and Boeing, are ongoing. Components of the plane's weather radar system have been sent to the United States for examination and testing, but results remain pending. A final accident report will be published once the investigation concludes, with interim updates released annually as per international guidelines.
