Study Finds Three-Fourths US Moms Struggle With Mental Health
A comprehensive study published by Columbia University reveals that three-fourths of U.S. mothers are experiencing mental health challenges, with only 25% reporting "excellent" mental health in 2023, down from 38% in 2016. The research, which surveyed nearly 190,000 mothers over seven years, also found declines in physical health, particularly among vulnerable groups such as single, younger, less educated mothers and those with multiracial or uninsured children. Mothers reporting "fair/poor" mental health rose significantly, and physical health ratings also worsened. Experts warn that deteriorating maternal mental health can negatively impact childbirth outcomes and children's long-term development, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing mothers' health as integral to child health. The study highlights the need to extend mental health support beyond the postpartum period, as mothers parenting children of all ages report worsening mental health. These findings underscore a growing national concern about parental mental health, with calls from health authorities to address ongoing pressures faced by parents.
