Brazil's Supreme Court has unfrozen the bank accounts of Elon Musk's Starlink and X (formerly Twitter) after transferring approximately $3.3 million from these accounts to pay fines. The fines were imposed due to X's failure to comply with orders to remove content deemed harmful to Brazil's democratic institutions and appoint a legal representative in the country. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees investigations into online disinformation, ordered the suspension of X at the end of August, which remains in place. Musk has criticized these actions as illegal and censorship, threatening to retaliate against Brazilian state assets. The Supreme Court's decisions stem from concerns over misinformation and threats to democracy, particularly related to former President Jair Bolsonaro's supporters. Despite the financial penalties being addressed, legal and operational issues continue to affect X's status in Brazil.
