Thailand's Same-Sex Marriage Law Boosts Tourism

Thailand's same-sex marriage legislation, effective January 22, 2025, is projected to attract an additional 4 million tourists annually, according to a report by Agoda. This development could increase tourism by 10%, generating an estimated $2 billion in revenue within two years, thereby contributing a 0.3% rise to the country's GDP. The influx is expected not only from same-sex couples but also from the broader LGBTQ community and expatriates seeking acceptance. The law will make Thailand the third Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage, following Taiwan and Nepal, and will grant same-sex couples rights related to child adoption, health care, and inheritance. The report also anticipates the creation of 76,000 full-time jobs in the tourism sector. This move aligns with public support for LGBTQ+ rights in Thailand, enhancing its reputation as a leading global travel destination.
