CPKC Completes Hydrogen Refueling Facilities in Alberta

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and ATCO EnPower have successfully completed the construction of two hydrogen production and refueling facilities in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta, as part of CPKC's Hydrogen Locomotive Program. These facilities are equipped with 1MW electrolyzers and renewable power from CPKC's solar facility, aiming to facilitate the retrofitting of diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells to reduce emissions. Kyle Mulligan from CPKC emphasized the importance of these stations for testing hydrogen locomotives and promoting lower carbon transportation. ATCO EnPower's Mark Brown highlighted this advancement as a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions. The facilities are expected to serve as a model for future hydrogen projects across Canada, showcasing the potential of hydrogen as a clean fuel source for commercial transportation. CPKC has been pursuing hydrogen-powered locomotives since 2020, with plans for further expansion of its retrofitting program.
