OpenAI Considers Selling AI Data Center Services to Offset Costs

OpenAI is considering launching a new revenue stream by renting out its AI-optimized data centers and infrastructure to other companies, a move similar to Amazon's early cloud computing strategy, according to CFO Sarah Friar. While this initiative is not currently active, OpenAI sees it as a future business opportunity to leverage its expertise in designing AI-specific data centers and reduce reliance on third-party vendors. Additionally, OpenAI is experiencing strong momentum in paid subscriptions, notably with the recent launch of ChatGPT-5 and new tiers like ChatGPT Go, which aims to offer affordable access in markets such as India. Friar also hinted at a potential IPO in the future and noted evolving dynamics in OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft, which remains critical.
