Singapore Opens 682MW Hydrogen‑Ready Plant, Adds Data Park
Singapore has opened a hydrogen-ready back-up power plant on Jurong Island consisting of two open-cycle gas turbines operated by Meranti Power with a combined 682 MW capacity; the units can begin supplying electricity within 10 minutes, reach full output in about 25 minutes, and can burn up to 30% hydrogen to boost grid resilience alongside slower combined-cycle plants. The government also announced about 300 hectares of Jurong Island will be set aside for renewable energy projects and low-carbon fuel production, and an additional 20 hectares reserved for a planned low-carbon data centre park designed for up to 700 MW of capacity. If realized, the data centre park would increase Singapore’s national data centre supply by roughly 50% from existing live and planned capacity. Operators at the site will be able to tap shared infrastructure and emerging low-carbon sources including expanded battery storage, solar, sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogen-ready plants and low-/zero-carbon ammonia generation, with shared pipelines and storage being trialled by authorities and industry partners. Authorities including the EDB and JTC said Jurong Island will serve as a global test-bed for new energies and cleaner fuels, and the measures are being supported by a Green Data Centre Roadmap offering funding, tax incentives and other supports to accelerate energy efficiency and decarbonisation.
