UK councils enact multiple new 20mph speed limits to enhance road safety

Several local councils in the UK have recently approved or proposed reductions in speed limits to enhance road safety and reduce pollution. Leicester City Council approved a 20mph speed limit on Watkin Road and six nearby streets, with strong resident support and funding from developers. Norfolk County Council plans to lower speed limits on parts of Bungay Road and in Great Melton, including changes from 60mph to 30mph or 40mph, to improve safety linked to local developments and community concerns. Anglesey County Council confirmed traffic orders for 22 roads, maintaining many existing 20mph limits in residential and pedestrian areas despite some proposals to increase them. In Scotland, a temporary 20mph limit was introduced on George Street in Oban as part of government road safety commitments.
