Cairns helicopter crash
A helicopter crash into the roof of the DoubleTree by Hilton in Cairns, Queensland, resulted in the death of the pilot and injuries to two guests, but investigators believe it could have been much more catastrophic. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell noted that rotor blades struck hotel rooms, where an elderly couple was sleeping, highlighting the potential for greater casualties. The crash occurred shortly after the helicopter took off on an unauthorized flight, raising questions about how it was operated and whether it was stolen or involved in any deliberate act. Almost 400 guests were evacuated from the hotel following the incident, with two individuals hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Investigators are examining the circumstances leading to the crash, which lasted only five minutes in the air before impact. Mitchell emphasized the need for a skilled pilot to operate the helicopter, indicating a serious breach of safety protocols.
