Albania Plans Microstate for Bektashi Order

Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced plans to create a sovereign microstate for the Bektashi Sufi Order, modeled after Vatican City, in Tirana. The Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order will encompass approximately 10 hectares and aims to promote a tolerant and peaceful version of Islam, allowing practices such as drinking alcohol and wearing various attire, reflecting the order's inclusive values. With the Bektashi community comprising around 10% of Albania's population, this initiative has been met with both enthusiasm and skepticism among the public and experts. The Bektashi Order, founded in the 13th century, is recognized for its mystical approach to Islam and its historical roots in the Ottoman Empire. The new state will have its own administration and citizenship will be limited to the clergy and administrative staff. Rama expressed hope for international recognition of this initiative as a step towards fostering religious harmony in an increasingly divided world.
