Cambodian PM Hun Manet Inaugurates $2.3B Techo International Airport Boosting Economic Growth

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet officially inaugurated the Techo International Airport (TIA), the country's largest and most modern airport, replacing the old Phnom Penh International Airport. The $2.3 billion airport, developed over 2,600 hectares in Kandal and Takeo provinces with construction starting in 2020, features a dual 4-kilometer runway capable of handling long-haul flights and all types of aircraft. Designed as a 4F-level international airport, TIA aims to boost Cambodia's economic growth, tourism, and logistics by serving as a major passenger and cargo hub with an initial capacity of 13 million passengers, expandable to 50 million by 2050. The airport project is a joint venture involving Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd and built by China State Construction Engineering Corporation. Despite the new infrastructure, Cambodia faces challenges in tourism recovery due to recent regional conflicts and issues related to illegal online scam operations. TIA follows the recent opening of Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, reflecting Cambodia's broader efforts to enhance its aviation sector and global connectivity.
