Albania Seizes Containers of Suspected Toxic Waste
A Turkish-flagged ship, the Moliva, carrying 102 containers of suspected toxic waste, has returned to Albania after being rejected by Thailand. The cargo, believed to contain electric arc furnace dust, was initially shipped from Albania in July but raised alarm due to its hazardous nature, prompting Thai authorities to refuse entry. Albanian prosecutors have ordered the seizure of the containers for criminal proceedings and further examination, emphasizing that the materials must be treated as evidence. The Basel Action Network (BAN), which raised concerns, claims that the waste could contain high levels of heavy metals and carcinogenic substances. There are ongoing investigations by both Albanian prosecutors and the EU Anti-Fraud Office regarding the legality and safety of the waste export. The Albanian Ministry of Infrastructure previously stated that the return of such cargo would require thorough analysis and verified evidence of its contents.
