Pennsylvania College Athlete Dies Collapsing Erie Half-Marathon

Toby Atwood, a 21-year-old rising senior at Thiel College and accomplished tennis player, tragically died after collapsing during the Presque Isle Half Marathon in Erie, Pennsylvania. Atwood, who held the No. 1 singles position and co-captain role on her college’s women's tennis team, was also a 4.0 student and president of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, known for her leadership and positive impact on peers. Despite immediate medical attention, she passed away at a hospital, with doctors later revealing she had a heart arrhythmia. Atwood was described by family, friends, and the college community as a hardworking, resilient, and beloved individual who left a profound mark on those around her. Thiel College and her sorority expressed deep sorrow and highlighted her role as a leader, mentor, and source of light in the community. Support services have been made available for grieving students, and a GoFundMe has been established to assist her family.
