Former England Bowler David Lawrence Dies Aged 61 From Motor Neurone Disease
David 'Syd' Lawrence, the first British-born black cricketer to play for England, has died at the age of 61 after a battle with motor neurone disease (MND). Lawrence, renowned as a fast bowler with a distinctive long run-up, played five Test matches for England and took 625 wickets in 280 matches for Gloucestershire during his 16-year career. His cricket career was cut short by a severe knee injury, but he remained an inspirational figure, later raising awareness and funds for MND, which led to his appointment as an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours shortly before his death. Despite the rapid progression of the disease, Lawrence maintained a fighting spirit and was deeply respected both on and off the field, including being named an honorary life vice-president of the ECB. His autobiography, "In Syd’s Voice," was published just a week before he passed, and his family and cricket community mourn his loss, recognizing his significant contributions and trailblazing role in the sport. The cricket world honored him with tributes during England’s Test match against India at Headingley, underscoring his lasting legacy.
