Gilbert Masengeli, the Acting Inspector-General of Police in Kenya, has been sentenced to six months in prison for contempt of court after failing to appear before the High Court regarding the disappearance of three men allegedly abducted by police. The court had summoned Masengeli seven times to testify about the whereabouts of the men, who had supported anti-government protests. Judge Lawrence Mugambi suspended the sentence for seven days to give him one last chance to appear in court, threatening that the Interior Cabinet Secretary must ensure his imprisonment if he fails to comply. The case was brought by the Law Society of Kenya, which is seeking the release of the missing activists. Despite ongoing efforts to locate the individuals, human rights activists claim many protesters have been abducted and held incommunicado. President William Ruto has promised to investigate the allegations but has defended the actions of state security forces during the protests.
