In Yemassee, South Carolina, 25 out of 43 rhesus macaque monkeys that escaped from the Alpha Genesis research facility have been successfully recovered. The escape occurred when a facility employee failed to properly secure a door. A significant number of the remaining monkeys are still active near the compound's fence but are reportedly in good health and pose no public health risk. Efforts to recapture all the animals are ongoing, with local authorities advising residents to keep their homes secure to prevent the monkeys from entering. The monkeys, all female and each weighing about 7 pounds, are bred for medical research purposes. The Alpha Genesis CEO, Greg Westergaard, confirmed that the recovery operations will continue until all the escaped primates are safely returned.
