In response to rising crime rates, Alabama officials have launched the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit (MACS) in Montgomery, comprising multiple law enforcement agencies including the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Since its training began on June 24, MACS has made 49 arrests, conducted 413 traffic stops, served 196 arrest warrants, and seized 33 firearms, four of which were modified to function as machine guns. Attorney General Steve Marshall emphasized the importance of community involvement in safety, urging residents to take ownership of their neighborhoods. The initiative aims to proactively tackle organized crime, drug conspiracies, and violent offenses, reflecting a commitment to enhance public safety in Montgomery. This collaborative effort addresses the urgent concerns of residents, particularly in light of recent violent incidents, including multiple homicides this year. Officials believe that by uniting resources and training, they can make a significant impact on crime reduction in the area.
