Indonesia School Collapse Traps Dozens, Kills Student

A multi-story Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, collapsed during afternoon prayers while undergoing unauthorized expansion, leaving at least one student dead, dozens injured, and around 65 people presumed trapped under rubble. The collapse was caused by the building's unstable foundation failing to support additional floors under construction. Rescue operations have been ongoing for over 12 hours, with hundreds of rescuers, police, and soldiers working through the night to free survivors, running oxygen and water to those trapped. Rescue efforts have been complicated by the unstable structure, limiting the use of heavy equipment to avoid further collapses. Families anxiously await news near the site and hospitals, while officials warn that the death toll may rise as more bodies have been seen under the debris. The trapped individuals are mostly boys aged 12 to 17 who were gathered for prayers when the collapse occurred.
