Opposition Party Moves to Impeach Acting President Han
The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea has initiated impeachment proceedings against Acting President Han Duck-soo after he failed to promulgate two special counsel bills aimed at investigating former President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee. Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae accused Han of deliberately delaying the investigation into Yoon's controversial martial law declaration, which he labels as an insurrection. Han's Cabinet meeting on December 24 did not address the bills, prompting accusations that he is obstructing constitutional processes. The Democratic Party, which holds a parliamentary majority, has previously passed legislation for a special prosecutor to investigate Yoon’s alleged insurrection and corruption. Park stated that any delay in the impeachment process is a continuation of the insurrection, further asserting that Han's actions indicate complicity with Yoon. Han, a veteran technocrat, assumed the presidency after Yoon's impeachment on December 14, and his response to the opposition's demands remains unaddressed.
