Pope Francis extends terms of dean, subdean in College of Cardinals

Pope Francis has extended the terms of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re as dean and Cardinal Leonardo Sandri as subdean of the College of Cardinals, according to a Vatican announcement. This decision, which follows a recent surge in interest surrounding papal elections due to the Oscar-nominated film 'Conclave,' sees both cardinals remain in their roles despite speculation about potential successors. Cardinal Re's term was set to end on January 18, while Cardinal Sandri's was due to expire on January 24. The Vatican did not clarify whether these extensions are for a full five-year term or simply temporary. Additionally, Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elevated to member of the Order of Bishops within the College of Cardinals, further enriching the Catholic hierarchy. Notably, due to their ages, neither Re nor Sandri will participate in any future conclave elections for a new pope, leaving the role of presiding cardinal to someone under 80 years of age.
