E-Scooter Collisions Prompt Calls for Regulation

E-scooter accidents have raised significant safety concerns in the UK, with 1,387 reported casualties in 2023, a decrease from 1,502 in 2022 but a notable rise from 484 in 2020. Six fatalities were recorded, all involving e-scooter riders, alongside 416 serious injuries and 965 minor injuries. The illegal use of private e-scooters on public roads is a focal point for police and government officials, as many riders lack knowledge of road safety regulations. In West Yorkshire, 18 injuries were reported in 2023, a stark increase from zero the previous year. Local authorities are pressing for stricter regulations and enforcement to ensure safety, especially as misuse and high-speed modifications persist. The RAC emphasizes that the urgency for regulatory updates is crucial to curb reckless riding and enhance public safety around e-scooter use.
