Suspect Identified in New Orleans Attack
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran, is identified as the suspect in a New Year's Day attack in New Orleans that resulted in at least 10 deaths and numerous injuries. Jabbar served in the Army from March 2007 to July 2020, holding roles in human resources and IT, and had previously been briefly enlisted in the Navy. The FBI reported that he drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street and opened fire before being shot by police. Weapons, a homemade explosive device, and an ISIS flag were found in his vehicle. Jabbar, who had faced financial difficulties and was reportedly wearing military gear during the attack, had a background in real estate and had served in Afghanistan. The motive for the attack remains unclear as the FBI continues its investigation into the incident as an act of terrorism.
