Funeral Held for Sussex County Firefighter

Thomas Berry III, a 23-year-old Sussex County firefighter and EMS technician, was honored in a funeral service on August 22, 2024, following his tragic death in the line of duty. Over 1,000 people attended the viewing and funeral at Crossroad Community Church, with a procession featuring more than 100 emergency vehicles escorting his casket through Georgetown. Berry died on August 13 after he stopped to assist at a car accident and was fatally injured when an electrical pole snapped, bringing down live wires. Described as a generational firefighter, he was deeply committed to serving his community and had received accolades for his dedication, including being named Ellendale Firefighter of the Year in 2022. The procession included emotional tributes from fellow firefighters and community members, who shared stories and saluted his service. His legacy of service will continue to be honored as he was laid to rest at the Ellendale Cemetery after the procession.
