The Albanian government has unveiled a historic AU$5.6 billion reform package aimed at transforming the aged care sector, described as the largest change in 30 years. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the importance of supporting the elderly, noting that the reforms will enable 1.4 million Australians to live independently at home longer through a program called Support at Home, effective July 1, 2024. The government will cover clinical care costs, while individuals will contribute based on income for daily living services, with specific discounts for pensioners. A lifetime cap of AU$130,000 on non-clinical care costs will be introduced, alongside a provision for $25,000 to support palliative care at home for the last three months of life. The reforms aim to enhance the quality of care facilities and support for those in residential aged care, ensuring no current residents face increased costs. With an anticipated doubling of Australians over 65 in the coming decades, the changes are intended to bolster the sector's financial viability and attract necessary investments.
