Iowans File Record 13,137 Claims During 2025 Unclaimed Property Day

During Iowa's 2025 Unclaimed Property Day, the state set a new record with over 13,000 claims filed, marking a 92% increase from the previous year. The claims totaled more than $4.6 million, with the largest individual claim exceeding $250,000. The event, celebrated annually on February 1, attracted more than half a million visits to the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt website. State Treasurer Roby Smith highlighted the ongoing effort to reunite Iowans with their unclaimed property, noting that over $587 million remains unclaimed. Smith encouraged all citizens to check the website to see if they have any unclaimed assets. The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt serves as the state's official repository for unclaimed property, which businesses must turn over when they lose contact with the owners.
