Niger Junta Agrees to Talks with Benin

Niger's military junta, led by Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani, is establishing an alliance known as AES with Burkina Faso and Mali to enhance security cooperation and create closer economic ties, aiming to introduce a common currency independent of the French-backed CFA Franc. The junta leaders have expelled French soldiers, sought military assistance from Russia, and emphasized greater sovereignty post-coup. Additionally, talks between Niger and Benin, facilitated by former Beninese presidents, aim to restore relations, potentially reopening the China-backed oil pipeline and border between the countries following escalating tensions and rebel sabotage. The resolution could also address accusations of hosting insurgents and promote dialogue amidst regional insecurity in the Sahel.
