U.S. App Store Drives $406B in 2024 Sales
Apple announced that its U.S. App Store ecosystem facilitated $406 billion in developer billings and sales in 2024, nearly tripling since 2019, according to a study by Boston University and Analysis Group. Over 90% of this revenue came from developers who paid no commission to Apple, with the largest shares from physical goods and services ($277 billion), in-app advertising ($75 billion), and digital goods and services ($53 billion). Small developers saw their earnings rise 76% from 2021 to 2024, while overall U.S.-based developer earnings more than doubled in five years. CEO Tim Cook highlighted Apple's investment in tools and resources to help developers innovate. The announcement comes as Apple faces legal and regulatory scrutiny over App Store commissions and rules on external payment links. Apple emphasized the App Store’s economic impact and ongoing support for developers despite regulatory pressures.
