Nahid Taghavi Released from Iranian Prison

Nahid Taghavi, a German-Iranian women's rights activist, has been released from an Iranian prison after more than four years and has returned to Germany. Taghavi was arrested in October 2020 during a visit to Tehran and subsequently sentenced to over 10 years in prison for alleged propaganda and association with an illegal group. Her release follows extensive campaigning by rights groups, particularly Amnesty International, which highlighted her torture and solitary confinement during her imprisonment. Taghavi's daughter expressed deep joy at her mother's return while also emphasizing the need for justice for other political prisoners in Iran. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock welcomed her release as a moment of joy, stressing ongoing concerns about Iran's human rights violations. The Iranian judiciary has not yet commented on the case.
