Julie Fragar Wins 2025 Archibald Prize

Julie Fragar won the 2025 Archibald Prize, Australia's top portraiture honor, for her oil painting 'Flagship Mother Multiverse (Justene),' featuring fellow artist Justene Williams. The judges unanimously selected her from 904 entries and 57 finalists, making Fragar the 13th woman to win in the prize's 104-year history. Her portrait explores the complexities of art-making and motherhood. Jude Rae received the $50,000 Wynne Prize for landscape painting, and Gene A'Hern was awarded the $40,000 Sulman Prize for genre painting. Across the three prizes, a record 2,394 entries were submitted, with over 70% of finalists being women. The finalists' exhibition runs from May 10 to August 17 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
