A24 has greenlit a science-fiction horror film adaptation of the viral YouTube series "The Backrooms," directed by 19-year-old Kane Parsons, making him the youngest director in A24 history. The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, with production set to begin this summer. The story originates from Parsons' found-footage horror series, which has amassed over 190 million views and is based on a 4chan creepypasta about an endless maze of eerie, abandoned office spaces inhabited by otherworldly beings. The project is a co-production between A24, Chernin Entertainment, Atomic Monster, and 21 Laps Entertainment, with James Wan and Shawn Levy among the executive producers. While plot details are being kept under wraps, the film will expand on the unsettling universe Parsons created, which has been praised as a new model for internet-born intellectual property success.
