Coventry's Very Light Rail Begins Public Testing

Coventry is launching the UK's first Very Light Rail (VLR) system, with public bookings now open for free rides on a 220-metre test track between Greyfriars Road and Queen Victoria Road. The VLR project aims to offer a more affordable, flexible, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional tramways, using battery-powered vehicles and shallow, precast concrete tracks that minimize disruption and lower installation costs. The current prototype accommodates up to 17 seated passengers and is wheelchair accessible, while future operational vehicles are planned to carry up to 60 passengers. The initiative is a research-led collaboration between Coventry City Council, the University of Warwick, and industry partners, funded by the UK government and regional transport authorities. Public demonstrations will provide valuable feedback and inform future expansion, with hopes to establish a city-wide VLR network if the trials are successful. Local officials highlight the project's potential to drive economic growth and set a new standard for urban transport infrastructure.
